«Dello svolgimento dell’ode in Italia»: Carducci’s perspective

Abstract

The contribution reconstructs the history of the essay Dello svolgimento dell’ode in Italia, which first appeared in 1902, making partial recourse to Carducci’s activity as poet, critic and professor. Particular attention is given to the analogies between the essay’s content and the lectures that Carducci held at the University of Bologna between January and May 1890. It also points out the strong influence on Carducci’s reflections of his earlier editorial works, on the one hand, and the experimentalism already typical of his youthful verses, on the other.
