Abstract
The essay analyzes the English translations of the novels by Giovan Francesco Biondi: Eromena and Donzella Desterrada, translated by James Hayward (Eromena. Or Love and Revenge, 1632; La Donzella desterrada. Or The banish’d virgin, 1635), and Coralbo, translated by Roberto Gentili (Coralbo, 1655). The paper aims to highlight stylistic aspects of the original Italian novels by studying the translation choices and the statements of the translators. Particular attention is paid to the biography and the social interactions of Hayward, in order to reconstruct the features of the intellectual circles in which these novels were circulated and appreciated.
