«Come Debussy aveva ridotto Wagner»: Montale, Contini and the “darkness”

Abstract

The article clarifies certain aspects of Montale's conception of poetic obscurities; it also highlights his perplexity towards Contini's programmatically difficult critical prose, showing, however, that the latter exerted an influence on Montale's essayism, especially for the technique of metaphorical juxtapositions between different authors.
