Abstract

This essay analyzes some key theoretical and technical issues that were raised in the process of translating into English a Baroque comedy by Giovan Battista Andreini, Amor nello specchio (1622). The author examines the complex nature of the relationship between performativity and theatrical text, especially in regard to the requirements for staging Andreini's comedy (songs, puns, dialects, etc.) and the language of the translated text.
