The stemma of Ariosto’s "Satire": the position of the ‘giolitina’

Abstract

This essay aims to analyze the first printed editions of Ariosto’s Satire, with a special focus on the edition published by Giolito in 1550 (G). Starting with philological and linguistic observations, I will analyze some of this edition’s variants that were generally overshadowed in the studies about Ariosto’s Satire; after these acquisitions, I will question G’s position in Segre’s stemma, underlining the need for a comprehensive revision of the Satire’s textual tradition.
